Universities will soon begin offering specialised degree programmes in IT skills
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has made the decision to initiate a two-year IT skills programme in institutions in response to a request from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT).
It has been reported that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has made the decision to launch an Associate Degree (AD) programme that would last for a period of two years in order to address the scarcity of IT professionals in the country.
According to a number of sources, the HEC attempted to get feedback from the institutions over the AD programme. The HEC has completed the finalisation of the curriculum for the AD programme after receiving feedback from the universities.
Officials from the HEC have stated that the subject has been forwarded to the Accreditation Council (AC) of the HEC after all of the preparatory work was finished. Following receiving the go-ahead from the AC, the programme will be made available to the public.
According to representatives of the Ministry, the country is now dealing with a chronic lack of information technology workers in the workforce. Each year, our institutions generate 25,000 graduates in the field of information technology (IT), but fewer than half of those graduates match the criteria of the industry.
The Ministry had informed the government that an increase in the number of people employed in IT is unavoidable in the event that IT exports are to expand. A goal of developing one million information technology workers within the next five years has been assigned by the government to the HEC and other organisations.
Authorities believe that the HEC's two-year AD programme will assist in addressing the scarcity of IT professionals in the workforce. According to the Ministry, it is now working on a variety of training programmes to better equip IT workers to meet the demands of the market.
